Exclusive | Ripped from the headlines: 12 viral news stories of 2024, Halloween costume ideas straight from The Post

This year has been real yell.

From earthquakes to Moo Deng to mob women, oh!

And as a nod to 2024’s funniest and scariest moments, why not relive the mayhem in pop culture-inspired costumes this Halloween?

Little devils with a lust for a laugh should have no problem picking cheeky ideas from the many trending themes we’ve all come to love.

Whether it’s celebrity drama, weird drama at the Olympics or — perhaps most disturbing of all — creepy shade thrown during the presidential campaign, bad news fans can really get a kick out of the biggest night of spoofing.

Here are some scary cool costumes RIP’d straight from the headlines.

The Paris Olympics

Australian dancer Rachel “Raygun” Gunn almost broke the internet with her terrifying spin this summer. Dressed in a green b-boy hunter outfit, the 37-year-old awkwardly twirled, jumped and spun around the stage as he competed for Olympic gold in July.

And while she looked hilarious doing it, the Down Under dancer’s look is sure to take home the “funniest” trophy this Hallows Eve.

Going for gold! Reporter Taylor Knight is a champion like Simone Biles. American Leotard, $35, Amazon. Stephen Yang for the NYPost (left)
Unlike gymnast Stephen “Pommel Horse Guy” Nedoroscik, sports editor Brendan Bianowicz never sleeps in the news. Team USA hoodie, $35, Amazon. Stephen Yang for the NYPost (left)

Just as likely to turn heads, however, are the lifts in honor of gymnast Stephen “Pommel Horse Guy” Nedoroscik, 25 — who secured the bronze medal for Team USA with his twisting talent — and Simone Biles, 27, the most decorated Olympic gold in the world. The Small Power medalist added four new awards to her collection this summer.

Justin Timberlake shot

It didn’t “ruin the tournament” after all. Editor Andy Tillett as Justin Timberlake in Timberbaked World Tour Tee, $30, shop.nypost.com. Stephen Yang for the NYPost (left)

Judging by the constant craziness on social media, it might be fair to say that our society is locked in arrested development.

This ugly truth became apparent when Justin Timberlake’s mug shot went viral after his DWI arrest in June. Online pranksters went berserk after the “Cry Me A River” frontman’s candid footage captured by the Sag Harbor Police Department on Long Island – where Timberlake, 43, was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence after crashing a martini (or two).

His outlandish accusations aside, fans of the *NSYNC alum spent weeks trying to recreate the trending sharpness, lighting and shot quality for their selfies. And now, Fright Night fanatics can too.

Ben Affleck sad

Gather your iced coffees and light a cigarette – it’s the Affleck effect.

With the frown of a desperation and the casual attire of an intern, Halloween fiends can copy this party of newly arrived bachelor Ben Affleck, 52.

The Gone Girl star’s hangover look became a signature after his short-lived marriage to Jennifer Lopez, 55, became public this summer. She filed for divorce in August.

But his hard break isn’t all bad—not for the kids who can’t wait to emulate his misery, at least.

Mets icon Grimace

His milkshake isn’t just getting all the guys on the court — it’s bringing luck to the Mets, too.

So, in honor of McDonald’s mascot with the monstrous palette, go goofy-eyed on this dreary day. The purple candy icon first won the hearts (and taste buds) of foodies in the summer of 2023, when Mickey D’s released a favorite berry drink in his honor.

But since he threw a stellar first pitch during a game against the Mets this June, snapping the team’s streak of bad luck, Grimace has been hailed as an icon by baseball fans across NYC.

It’s “ba dah ba ba ba”-badass.

Mo Deng

You can’t see Copy Editor Maude Campbell in this inflatable hippo costume ($30 at Halloween.com), but she’s just as adorable as Moo Deng. Stephen Yang for the NYPost (left)

Moo’s away from those extravagant Marilyn Monroe costumes, and do this on October 31 as one i was listening legend.

Steal the night as Moo Deng, the lovable quirky hippo who practically stole our hearts. Doll up like a piggy diva with powder pink to replicate her rosy cheeks and dewy blushes to match her natural glow.

Oh, and party animals hoping to really soak up the vibe of the wild thing should also pretend to grab some knees.

Childless cat lady

For people offended by the “childless cat lady” controversy, this is purr-fect fits

To proverbially throw the kitty litter in the eyes of any single, childless women who look, why not rock a dress that spotlights the lifestyle with pride?

It’s sure to terrify the trolls.

RFK and the bear

Do you really want to be a grizzly? Dress up as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his little grizzly.

In August, the president’s chilling admission of being asked to dump a dead bear in Central Park 10 years ago caused eyes to bulge in frightened disbelief.

So, stepping up as the baby of the politician’s niece and his little puppy is sure to scare off even the toughest of tricksters this year.

Brat wine

NYC has its rat czar – so be its “Brat” star.

Crawl through the streets like vermin in a “worthless” way for this unholy occasion.

The “brat” aesthetic, popularized by British pop star Charli XCX this summer, is rooted in reckless fun. Think unwashed hair, immodest clothing, wild tattoos and frighteningly high levels of self-confidence.

Kill the NSFW style and your friends will be acid-green with envy.

Earthquake with three states

Shake things up this spooky season by rocking through town like the 4.8 magnitude that rocked New York and neighboring states in April.

While most people can laugh about it now, the freak earthquake, a rarity for us East Coasters, sent shockwaves through residents of the Big Apple, Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

So it seems only fitting to scare the locals with similar seismic activity on the big night, right?

Mob Wives

You must have the Mob Wife mod. Lifestyle reporter Adriana Diaz tells us it’s still stylish.

The Bride of Frankenstein won’t be the only miss to slay the stage this Halloween.

Pulling the big guns are the glamorous girls of the “mob wives fashion” trend, a move made fantastic by the surprisingly eye-catching.

Fur coats, animal prints, high heels and a Tony Soprano-esque husband complete the look.

But those who love, beware!

If you wear the wrong regalia, you may find yourself sleeping with the fishes.

Stanley Cup Girls

Every cool girl owns a Stanley that’s bigger than her, as “SNL” spoofed earlier this year. Real estate reporter Mary Jacob with lifestyle reporter Ben Cost in Tumbley suit, $35, Target.com. Stephen Yang for the NYPost (left)

Leave yours CUPS faces junk à la viral “Stanley Cup girlies.”

In commemoration of this month’s spooky holiday, come dressed as one of those expensive and highly decorated 40 oz. The Stanley Cup. Overclocked portables have taken over social media this fall, all thanks to girls who watch me on TikTok and even got tricked by Saturday Night Live.

Now, haute hellions can get in on the fun, too.

Just throw on a mini backpack, accessorize yourself with key chains or hand fans, and — as the cherry on top — dress up your top half with a full tray of snacks.

And, voila! You are a fashion vessel.

WC Skibidi

Lifestyle reporter Alex Mitchell recreates the Skibidi toilet meme. Stephen Yang for the NYPost (left)

It’s creepy and weird. Mysterious and spooky. It’s too bad – Gen Alpha’s dictionary.

And one of the worst terms in their children’s vocabulary is “Toilet Squid”.

A buzzword for digital natives under the age of 10, the Skibidi toilet is a popular 72-part YouTube series featuring a human head emerging from a porcelain throne and singing songs filled with youth slang.

The show’s minor humor centers around a war between toilets with human heads and humanoids with security cameras for heads.

Fitting like the stinky seat will surely blow away the competition.
